School Horses

You don't need a horse in order to learn to ride!  Many of our students began by taking lessons on our school horses before buying horses of their own.

It takes a special kind of horse to be a lesson horse.  School horses must be patient and tolerant of beginners' mistakes, yet independent enough to make the rider earn her results honestly.

School horses are valuable animals who work hard and deserve our love and respect.  Our school horses receive routine visits from the equine massage therapist as well as the farrier and veterinarian, plus plenty of treats from adoring students!

Buffy

To know Buffy is to love him!  Buffy is a dun Quarter Horse cross who has lived at Rosewood since he was 10 years old.

Pat's youngest daughter Emily used money from her tobacco crop to purchase this former western pleasure horse, and made him into a champion in the hunter ring before his retirement a few years later.  Now Buffy spends his days teaching lesson students how to canter, and has carried many riders safely over their first jumps.

Buffy is 22 years old and 15 hands high.

Apache

Apache is a pinto Arabian cross.  She has lived at Rosewood for 5 years, ever since Pat's husband Harrell received her as partial payment for cutting down a tree.  At 14.1 hands, she is just the right size for younger students and is patient with beginners; as students advance, she is perfect for teaching them how to jump with confidence.  Apache is 12 years old.

Flirt (Photo Coming Soon)

Flirt is a pinto Arabian cross.  Flirt came to Rosewood from the North Carolina Equine Rescue League (www.ncerl.com), who saved her from an abusive situation.  She has begun a new life as a hunt seat and saddleseat lesson horse here.

Flirt is 7 years old and 14 hands high.

Misty

Misty is a 5 year old Paso Fino/QH cross.

Johara (In Training)

Johara is a chestnut Arabian mare.  Like Flirt, she was rescued by NCERL and has begun a new life here at Rosewood.  She is currently being trained in hunt seat and saddleseat.

Johara has made great progress and is slowly learning to trust others.  She is getting used to the idea that grain comes every day now and hay and treats are always available.  Johara is 16 years old and 14.3 hands high.
